Dog Days by Jeff Kinney

(4th-8th) In book four, Greg Heffley journals about his summer vacation. His ideal summer break includes staying up all night playing video games and watching TV and then sleeping until noon with no rules or responsibilities. Unfortunately, his summer is filled with one disappointment after another. At one point Greg and his buddy Rowley decide to start a lawn care service to raise money. "We called the Yellow Pages people and told them we wanted to place an ad in their book. And not just one of those tiny little text ads, but a really big one with full color that takes up two whole pages....[they] told us it would cost us a few thousand bucks to put our ad in their book. I told them that didn't make a lot of sense to me, because how's someone supposed to pay for an ad if they haven't even earned any money yet?" This is just one of the many funny scenes in the book. I even found myself laughing out loud a couple of times. However, the story line is a bit negative and the humor is geared to older students. Therefore, I recommend it to students with some reservations.
