I love reading great books about the Civil War. It is such an interesting time in our history. Below are a few of my top picks on this topic.
I stumbled across this wonderful book at the Civil War museum in Vicksburg. We were on our way to Tennessee for our summer vacation and my husband and I decided to make a stop at this museum to show our children the ironclad ship on display there. This book is probably the best book I have ever read about the Civil War. It is written by Steve Sheinken, a textbook writer who tells readers that this book is the one that he always wanted to write, one that is packed with "all the true stories and real quotes that textbooks never tell you."
This is a fictional retelling of the real story about the slave, Henry Brown who escaped slavery by packing himself into a small wooden crate in Virginia and mailing himself to an abolistionist office in Philadelphia.
Did you know that "O Captain! My Captain!" written by Walt Whitman is about Lincoln's death? Well, it is. Check out this book and read this beautifully written poem.
