The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

(YA) I know it has been a while since I have posted anything on my blog. I have been reading many great books; I just have not taken the time to blog. However, after completing this book, I had to share it with others. This is a fabulous book about the Holocaust. Bruno, a nine year old boy, is the main character. At the beginning of the book, his father is promoted to "commandant of Auschwitz" and therefore the family moves from Berlin to a house near the concentration camp. Bruno, who is lonely, loves to explore. On one of his explorations, he meets a Jewish boy who is sitting near the fence of the concentration camp. Their friendship grows as the boys spend many afternoons together. Readers will fall in love with Bruno, who is a naive little boy. It is clear that he does not understand the political events taking place. For example, he is jealous of those on the other side of the fence because they get to wear pajamas all day. While this book is about hatred and prejudice, the author does a fantastic job of explaining the atrocities of the Holocaust in a way that is appropriate for young adults.
