(5-8) I have read several of Richard Peck's books, and I have loved each and every one of them. In this book, the story is told through the eyes of a young boy, Davy Bowman, growing up in the Midwest during the 1940's. WWII required everyone to make sacrifices. Cities had scrap drives to collect metal and rubber, and food, such as coffee and sugar, were rationed. Davy Bowman is eager to do his part; after all, his brother (the hero) is fighting in the war. If you want to step back in time and glimpse what life was like during the '40s, and laugh along with the larger than life characters, this is the book for you.
